DESCRIPTION:  The Multicultural Outreach Program helps clients whose second language is English locate mental health providers, advocates for increased mental health services for Nashville’s foreign-born residents, and builds coalitions with other agencies to create new resources. Services include Information and Referral in Spanish, support groups for Hispanic women, groups for Metro Nashville students and parents, cultural and mental health education, monthly networking meetings called “Encuentro Latino” held on the third Monday of each month and mental health training for interpreters and how to work with interpreters for mental health professionals.

ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY:  Mental health materials are available in Spanish and brochures on Depression are available in ten other languages. An example of Metro Nashville schools where student and parent groups take place are Tusculum Elementary, Cameron Middle, Croft Middle, Wright Middle, Glencliff High, Overton High and New Visions Academy. Weekly support groups for women in Spanish are available at MHAMT offices. Bi-lingual staff is available in Spanish Monday through Thursday.

FEES:  All services are free except there is a charge for mental health training for interpreters and how to work with interpreters for mental health professionals.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  Pre- and post-test surveys are provided to all group participants in order to track the reporting of increased knowledge, increased positive feelings about themselves and improved parenting skills.
