DESCRIPTION:  The Health Program at NICE consists of the Nashville Refugee Health Initiative (NRHI) and Preventative Health (PH).

The NRHI program has several components—health classes, medical screenings and Wellness Partners. Through health classes, students participate in and learn skills through healthy cooking classes, fitness classes, and general healthy living classes. Medical screenings are offered once a month for participants to monitor blood sugar, blood pressure, and weight. Finally, Wellness Partners, offered to families new to the United States needing to be coached through the medical system, matches families with volunteers who meet with them once a week to teach a curriculum on healthy living and navigating the health care system.

Within the PH program, all refugees resettled to the United States though NICE are given a health orientation class on general health, mental health and nutrition. PH also offers health navigation services to newly arrived refugees with serious medical conditions who need help understanding and getting to medical appointments.

Under both programs, classes, lessons and one-on-one trainings on healthy living are offered to refugees and immigrants. Participants in the programs are encouraged to live healthy lifestyles and are given the tools to do so.

Please contact Frances by email for enrollment and participation information.

ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY:  NRHI is open to any immigrant. Children may be enrolled with parental consent. PH components may be restricted to newly-arrived refugees or persons eligible for refugee services or have certain other restrictions. Contact Frances with any questions regarding eligibility.
